Basic Radio Awareness

Welcome to Radio Communication 101. This is the starting place for the Tait Radio Academy. In this course, you will gain a solid foundation and understanding of critical communications.

About the course

New to the field of critical communications? Want a refresher on the basics? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Basic Radio Awareness is taught by Dr. Jan Noordhof, a consultant with over 20 years’ experience in critical communications. He walks through the foundations of critical communications, covering topics like communication, modulation, trunking, propagation, TDMA and FDMA, and more.

The course contains three lessons (listed below) and a total of 15 different video shorts that explain specific topics. Once you have completed the course, you can take the final assessment and earn a certificate of completion.

To supplement your learning, we highly recommend you download the accompanying study guide.

Course syllabus

Lesson 1: Introduction to Radio Communications Principles

All forms of communication follow the same basic principles. In this first chapter, we explore those principles and the different ways in which people communicate. We also look at radio waves and learn how radio technology is able to make your voice heard many miles away.

Lesson 2: Modulation and Radio Building Blocks

In this chapter we discuss modulation and the building blocks of radio. How does your voice get converted into waves that can be transmitted and received by radio devices?

Lesson 3: Communications Systems

No two communication networks are the same. Trunked or conventional? Digital or analog? TDMA or FDMA? In chapter three, we explore the different types of communication systems and their various benefits and disadvantages.

Lesson 4: Final assessment

Once you have completed all the lessons, you can take this final assessment to earn a Tait Radio Academy certificate for the Basic Radio Awareness course.
